Palio Walking Tour - discover the horse race tradition

To say you know a place means to know its traditions. In Siena, it's all about the Palio, the centuries-old traditions formed around a horse race that takes place twice a year, in Piazza del Campo.

What you will see

Being part in this tour, you will get a chance to discover everything about the history and the tradition behind this important horse race. An expert local guide will tell you about the Palio, from the main square, Piazza del Campo, where the celebration takes place, every year, on July 2 and August 16. Having been shown a video, you'll see how the horse race, around the main square, is run.

The tour continues in one of the 17 districts (Contrade), where the guide will show you the district's fountain, where children are baptized, and the district's museum, where the ‘Standards’, the banners given to the winning Contrada, are preserved, and eventually to the oratory.
